VA Aid and Attendance, and the care it pays for
A benefit that goes unclaimed is not a benefit. Most eligible families never apply.
Aid and Attendance is a monthly pension supplement for wartime veterans and surviving spouses who need help with daily activities. It can meaningfully offset the cost of in-home care, and it is routinely left on the table because the paperwork is discouraging and nobody explains it.
What is the VA Aid and Attendance benefit?
Aid and Attendance is an increased monthly pension paid by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to eligible wartime veterans and surviving spouses who need help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, or eating, or who are housebound. It is paid in addition to the basic VA pension and can be used toward in-home care costs. Eligibility depends on wartime service dates, discharge status, medical need, and income and net worth limits set by the VA.
What a caregiver actually does.
Understanding eligibility
We walk you through the wartime service and financial criteria in plain language so you know whether applying is worth your time before you start.
Gathering the documents
Discharge paperwork, medical evidence of the need for assistance, and financial records. Knowing what to collect is most of the battle.
Care that starts now
Care does not have to wait for an approval decision. Many families begin private-pay care immediately and apply in parallel.
Coordination once approved
When a benefit is approved, we align the care schedule to what the household can now sustain.
Respite for veteran families
The spouse of a veteran with dementia or a service-connected disability is carrying a heavy load. Scheduled relief is part of the plan.

Questions about VA Aid and Attendance.
Call (919) 249-1607 if yours is not answered here.
Do you file the VA claim for me?
No. Filing is handled by a VA-accredited attorney, claims agent, or a Veterans Service Organization representative, and accreditation is required by law to prepare or present a claim. We help you understand eligibility, organize documents, and provide the care itself.
Can we start care before the benefit is approved?
Yes, and most families do. Approval timelines are unpredictable, and a person who needs help today should not wait on paperwork. Care usually begins as private pay and the benefit offsets cost once it is granted.
What are the income limits?
The VA sets income and net worth thresholds and adjusts them annually, so any figure quoted here would be wrong within a year. Check the current limits at va.gov or ask an accredited representative, and bring what you find to the assessment.
