Respite care for the person doing everything

You cannot pour from an empty cup, and you have been pouring since March.

Family caregivers burn out on a predictable curve, and the collapse usually arrives as a health crisis of their own. Respite is not indulgence. It is the maintenance that keeps the primary caregiver in the role long enough to finish it well.

How does respite care work?

A trained caregiver takes over the routine for a scheduled block of time, from a few hours a week to several consecutive days, so the family caregiver can rest, work, travel, or attend to their own health. The plan follows the routine already in place, including meals, medication times, and sleep, so the person receiving care experiences continuity rather than disruption.

What a caregiver actually does.

Scheduled weekly hours

The same hours every week, so you can actually plan a life around them. Ad hoc relief is not relief, it is one more thing to arrange.

Multi-day coverage

For a trip, a surgery of your own, or a funeral. We staff the whole block rather than leaving you to stitch together three people.

The routine you already built

We follow your instructions on meals, medications, bedtime, and the small rituals that keep things calm. Respite should not cost the person a week of readjustment.

A written handover

What happened, what was eaten, what was refused, what changed. You should come back informed, not interrogating.

Emergency and short-notice cover

We cannot always fill a same-day request, but tell us the situation and we will tell you the truth quickly instead of leaving you waiting.

Care for the caregiver's own appointments

Your dentist, your physical therapy, your annual physical. The ones that have been postponed twice already.

Will my mother accept a stranger while I am gone?

Do not make the first respite shift the day you leave. Schedule two or three short overlapping visits first, with you present, so the caregiver becomes familiar before they become responsible. We build that ramp into the plan when we know a trip is coming.

How far in advance should I book multi-day respite?

As early as you can. Multi-day and overnight blocks take more coordination to staff than weekly hours, so a firm date given early is far more likely to be covered by the caregiver you want.
